OUR GARDEN CLUB WAS FORMED OVER 50 YEARS AGO BY HELEN TANNER, WHOSE PLAQUE IS OUT FRONT OF THIS BUILDING. OUR CLUB IS AFFILIATED WITH THE NATIONAL GARDEN CLUB AND THE MICHIGAN GARDEN CLUB. AND OUR GOALS FOLLOW THEIR EDICT TO US, SO TO SPEAK. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE HAVE TO DO IS EDUCATE OUR MEMBERS AND THE PUBLIC ABOUT GARDENING. AND SO AT OUR ONCE A MONTH MEETINGS, WE HAVE NOT ONLY BUSINESS TO TAKE CARE OF, BUT WE ALSO HAVE A PRESENTER WHO IS AN EXPERT IN SOME FIELD TO EDUCATE OUR GROUP. FOR EXAMPLE, WE HAD RIQUE CAMPA COME AND TALK ABOUT DEER CONTROL IN MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP AND TALK ABOUT DEER BEHAVIOR AND GIVE US A FEW HINTS ABOUT HOW WE COULD KEEP DEER OUT OF OUR GARDENS, WHICH BASICALLY IS YOU CAN'T DO IT. WE HAVE THE PLANT AT PINK GARDEN, WHICH IS A MEMORIAL FOR THOSE WHO HAVE HAD BREAST CANCER. WE HAVE THE BARNES HOUSE GARDEN. BACK DOOR GARDEN IS A VEGETABLE GARDEN BEHIND THE THE FARMHOUSE AND BARN. WE HAVE AND WE EVEN DO A LITTLE BIT WITH THE TOLL GATE HOUSE. THE TWOHY MEMORIAL GARDEN IS A POLLINATOR GARDEN THAT IS SLIGHTLY OUTSIDE OF THE PARK ITSELF. AND WE DO TAKE CARE OF OTHER GARDENS OUTSIDE OF THE PARK. WE TAKE CARE OF THIS GARDEN OUT FRONT HERE WE DO THE SAFETY GARDEN. WE DO THE POST OFFICE AND WE DO THE FIRE HOUSE GARDEN, FIRE STATION GARDEN. SO DO A NUMBER OF GARDENS OUTSIDE THE VILLAGE. WE WORK WITH PARKS AND REC. WE'RE PART OF THEIR FIVE YEAR PLAN, AND WE ALSO WORK WITH THE FRIENDS OF HISTORIC MERIDIAN TO [00:05:03] MAKE SURE THAT WE FOLLOW 19TH CENTURY HABITS IN TERMS OF CULTIVATING THE GARDEN. SO YOU WON'T SEE A GARDEN AROUND THE SCHOOLHOUSE BECAUSE GARDENS AROUND SCHOOLHOUSES WAS NOT DONE IN THE 19TH CENTURY, AS WE'VE BEEN LED TO BELIEVE. SEVERAL OF OUR GARDENS, INCLUDING THE POST OFFICE GARDEN, THE TWOHY GARDEN, AND THE PLANT IT PINK GARDEN, ARE AWARD WINNING GARDENS. OKAY, I'M PUSHING, I'M PUSHING. THE PLANTS THAT WE PUT IN THE GARDEN ARE FROM NOT ONLY A DONATION FROM THE TOWNSHIP OF AROUND $800, I THINK, BUT WE EARN MONEY WITH OUR PLANT SALE, WHICH WE HAD LAST SATURDAY, AND LATELY WE'VE BEEN EARNING AROUND 4 TO $5,000 AT THE PLANT SALE. AND SO WE USE THAT TO BUY PLANT MATERIAL FOR THE GARDENS. SO MONDAY WAS A BUSY DAY FOR US AND IT WAS UNFORTUNATELY A VERY HOT DAY. I'M PUSHING THE BUTTON. THERE WE GO. THIS IS ONE OF OUR GARDEN TEAMS THAT IS WORKING ON THE CHAPEL GARDEN. SO WE HAVE TEAMS OF MAYBE UP TO EIGHT MEMBERS WHO VOLUNTEER TO WORK IN THE GARDENS. DURING THE SUMMER WE DO NOT HAVE REGULAR MEETINGS, BUT WE WORK ON JUST MAINTAINING THE GARDENS IN THE SUMMER. I'M PUSHING THAT. MAYBE I'M NOT PUSHING HARD ENOUGH. SO YOU CAN SEE, FOR EXAMPLE, WHEN THE GARDENS ARE IN FULL BLOOM THEY'RE BEAUTIFUL. AND OF COURSE PEOPLE WALK BY, THEY SIT AND ENJOY, THEY HAVE PICNICS AND JUST SIT ON BENCHES AND, AND WATCH THE GARDENS. THIS IS THE TWOHY POLLINATOR GARDEN. YOU SEE, WE HAVE A LITTLE WREN HOUSE UP THERE WHICH HAS BEEN RENOVATED AND I THINK IT HAS SOME HAS A FAMILY THERE NOW. OKAY, I'M PUSHING, I'M PUSHING. OKAY. THIS IS THE TEAM THAT WORKS IN THE WHAT WE CALL THE BACK DOOR GARDEN. THIS IS A VEGETABLE GARDEN. WE COLLECT THE PRODUCE FROM THIS GARDEN AND DONATE IT TO THE LANSING FOOD BANK. WE ALSO WRITE GRANTS TO FUND SOME OF OUR PROJECTS. HERE WE HAVE A COUPLE OF RAISED BEDS THAT YOU CAN SEE ON EACH SIDE. WE WERE CONCERNED THAT PEOPLE WHO COULDN'T BEND AND STOOP HAVE A PLACE WHERE THEY COULD WORK. UNFORTUNATELY, RAISED BEDS WERE NOT A PART OF THE 19TH CENTURY MINDSET, SO WE HAD A HARD TIME FINDING PLACES FOR RAISED BEDS, BUT IT WORKED OUT VERY WELL IN THE BACK DOOR GARDEN. A COUPLE OF GARDENS THAT I THINK ARE REALLY IMPORTANT ARE THE GAZEBO AND THE CHAPEL. YOU CAN SEE THE GAZEBO WHEN IT'S IN FULL BLOOM IS QUITE A LOVELY PLACE TO HAVE PICTURES MADE. SO WE OFTEN SEE FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN DRESSED IN THEIR PROM ATTIRE, COMING TO THE GAZEBO AND OTHER GARDENS IN THE VILLAGE TO HAVE THEIR PICTURES MADE. THEY ALSO HAVE WEDDING PICTURES AT THE GAZEBO. NOW THIS IS THE GAZEBO IN WINTER, SO IT'S NOT IN FULL BLOOM, BUT IT MAKES A BEAUTIFUL SETTING FOR MEMORIAL PHOTOGRAPHS. THIS IS THE CHAPEL. OF COURSE. WEDDINGS ARE ARE HELD HERE. IT'S ALSO A SITE FOR PICTURES. SO AS PEOPLE ARE ENTERING IT'S VERY IMPORTANT TO HAVE THESE GARDENS LOOKING VERY NICE. AND THIS IS THE CHAPEL TEAM LAST YEAR ON OPENING DAY WITH ALL THEIR TOOLS GETTING PULLING WEEDS OUT AND GETTING MULCH READY. WE DO WORK IN THE WINTER TO BEAUTIFY THE GARDENS, SO ONE THING WE DO IS MAKE SWAGS FOR THE VILLAGE. 17 SWAGS ARE REQUIRED. AND SO LAST YEAR WE FORGED IN OUR OWN GARDENS AND OUR NEIGHBOR'S GARDENS AND [00:10:07] ALONG THE ROADSIDES IN MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP TO FIND PINE CONES AND WINTERBERRY AND BOUGHS TO INCLUDE IN OUR SWAGS. AND I THINK THEY LOOK ESPECIALLY NICE AGAINST A WHITE BACKGROUND. SO WE HAVE SWAGS ON THE FARMHOUSE. WE EVEN HAVE SWAGS ON THE TOLL HOUSE, AND I THINK THEY LOOK ESPECIALLY NICE IN A SNOWY WINTER SETTING FOR THE GENERAL STORE. WE ALSO GET INVOLVED IN EVENTS IN THE VILLAGE. I THINK THESE PICTURES WERE MADE ON HERITAGE DAY. IS THAT WHAT WE CALL IT? OKAY. AND WE HAVE A TABLE SET UP WHERE WE SELL CARDS THAT HAVE BEEN MADE BY OUR PRESSED FLOWER GROUP. A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, WE ALSO STAGED A FLOWER SHOW. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT GARDEN CLUBS DO AND THESE ARE COMPETITIVE EVENTS. HERE YOU SEE THE HORTICULTURAL EXHIBIT AND SOME OF THE RIBBONS THERE. AND THIS IS A GENERAL STORE WITH SOME OF THE MINIATURE FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS DISPLAYED. SO WE HAD THINGS ALL OVER THE PARK FOR OUR FLOWER SHOW. MOST READILY, BUT ALSO MSU AND LANSING TO CLEAR THE LOGJAMS AND DEBRIS FROM THE RED CEDAR RIVER TO MAKE IT A PASSABLE WATERWAY FOR PADDLERS AND ENTHUSIASTS LOOKING TO HAVE SOME RECREATION IN OUR OWN BACKYARD.
